Wrestling is a popular sport, especially for high school boys. Though you need less equipment than for some sports (say, hockey), there are a few things you should get before the season begins: 1. Running shoes. Wrestlers are expected to do cardio and weight training at daily practices to keep in your best shape for the match. 2. Wrestling shoes. On the day of your match, you will need a separate pair of sneakers to wear on the mats. They are incredibly light and thin-soled, and exist to give you added traction and ankle support. 3. Headgear with Chin Strap. Some schools provide head gear, but as it goes across your ears, many choose to buy their own for cleanliness and health purposes. You will be expected to provide your own mouth guard whether you use the school supplied headgear or your own. Though not always required, mouth guards are highly recommended. 4. A wrestling singlet. The school most often provides singlets, as they are mandated uniforms. A singlet for practice is not necessary. Your school also provides other equipment needed for wrestling. You will be expected to do weight training in a gym with the team at least twice a week to build muscle mass, so there is no need to buy your own free weights. Competition mats and scales are also taken care of by the school. Make sure to weigh yourself on the school's accurate scale as weight classes will be based on that scale's reading and not the one in your home. Carefully clean mats at the beginning and end of each practice to avoid passing skin diseases common amongst wrestlers. Schools usually give wrestling medals at the end of the season.
